Electric Department Supervisor
Job description
Essential Job Duties: Meets with public to ensure service problems are solved, to include follow up action. Ensures the power lines are adequate to handle load and are free from interference (tree limbs, etc.) that could cause outage problems. Pulls on-call duty when required. Directs and assigns tasks to all subordinate personnel. Plans, supervises and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical lines, poles, service meters and related distribution equipment. Responsible for insuring wiring for new projects are in compliance with City policy and codes. Ability to analyze the system and make repairs and/or install new equipment. Assist in the monthly meter reading. Systematically changes meters as required. Responsible for all reports required by all agencies. Responsible to ensure all equipment is approved, inspected and safe for use, also ensures all insurance requirements are satisfied and that personnel use every safety precaution associated with working in a high voltage electrical system. Assist in maintaining maps for electrical system and lines. Ensure a training program is ongoing and all employees participate.
Non-essential Job Duties: May be required to make pick-up and deliveries for other departments; may be called on to assist other departments. Ability to perform manual task as necessary. Ability to communicate with citizens, contractors, and employees.
Physical and Environmental Conditions: Ability to sit, stand, stoop, climb, lift and work in small areas. Ability to lift electrical equipment, barricades and other equipment necessary to complete the task. Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperature, adverse weather conditions, potentially hazardous chemicals, materials and electrical voltage that can cause serious injury or death.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of the municipal electrical system and the practical application of the equipment associated with all aspects of the electrical system. Knowledge of construction of the electrical utility system, how to size and install transformers and meters. Be safety trained in all aspects of high voltage repairs and construction. Ability to work with skilled and semi-skilled personnel. Be able to work from drawings, plans, schematics and blue prints.
Skill: Skill to communicate in writing and orally; skill to calculate different mathematical functions required to complete reports and accomplish tasks related to the electrical systems; skill to operate a variety of equipment, operate a two-way radio, read meters; skill in management of personnel.
Abilities: Ability to conduct independent research and apply the results; ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and diplomatically with the public, employees and all level of governmental entities; ability to plan well in advance and use time effectively; ability to follow verbal and written directions and communicate both verbal and written instructions to subordinates, as well as any public or private entity; ability to seek a solution to any and all problems
Education: High school or equivalent and skill courses related to an electrical system.
Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in electrical construction and maintenance work.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills, and ability is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certificates: Texas Class “A” or “B” driver’s license.
